Retinal laser treatment
Laser treatment is used for certain retinal conditions, including retinal tears and blood vessel complications caused by diabetes. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment aims to seal off an affected area or reduce the risk of further vision loss. After examining your retina, the doctor determines whether laser treatment is appropriate and how much is needed
- Retinal tears have been found for which a protective barrier is appropriate
- Blood vessel changes in diabetic retinopathy require laser treatment
- Treatment is needed to reduce the complication risk of a specific retinal condition

What the laser does and what to expect
The laser treats selected areas of the retina. For some tears, it creates areas of adhesion around the tear to limit the spread of detachment. In blood vessel disease, the treatment area and aim are different and depend on the diagnosis
Retinal laser treatment differs from laser vision correction for short-sightedness. It treats a specific condition and aims to protect vision. It does not always improve visual acuity and may form part of a broader treatment plan
How to prepare
- Bring previous retinal images and reports
- Tell the doctor about medicines, diabetes and other conditions
- Arrange to return home without driving if dilation is planned
After your appointment or procedure
Temporary blur and light sensitivity may occur afterwards. Your doctor will explain restrictions and follow-up timing. Many new floaters, flashes, a dark curtain or sudden vision loss require an urgent examination
Frequently asked questions
Does every area of retinal thinning need treatment?
No. Indications depend on examination findings, symptoms and risks. Not every retinal change needs laser treatment
Is one session enough?
The extent of treatment depends on the condition. Multiple stages or a combination of treatments may be needed
Does laser replace surgery for detachment?
A substantial retinal detachment may require surgery. The ophthalmologist decides on the appropriate method after examination
